How much does AI consulting cost in Australia?

Short answer: it depends on what you need done. A focused strategy for one team is a much smaller job than a multi-site rollout with custom builds. The biggest factors are the size of your business, how many teams and sites are involved, whether tools are configured or built, and how much data and compliance work is needed.

I'm Sam Thompson, and I run Attua, an AI consultancy for Australian businesses. I wrote this because almost nobody talks about price openly, and that makes it hard to know whether a quote is fair. Below is what you're paying for, what moves the cost, and how to avoid paying for the wrong thing.

What you're actually paying for

AI consulting usually breaks down into four kinds of work. Most businesses need some mix of them.

1. Readiness assessment or strategy

Someone reviews how your business works, finds where AI fits, and gives you a prioritised plan. This is usually the smallest piece of work and the easiest place to start. A single department review sits at the lighter end. A multi-team roadmap with business cases and governance takes more time.

2. Implementation

Getting a tool or workflow actually working: configuring, building, connecting to your systems and testing. This varies the most, because "implementation" can mean switching on Copilot for one team or building a custom system across multiple sites.

3. Training

Teaching your people to use AI well. The cost depends on how many people are involved, how much preparation is needed and whether it's in person. Ask for a quote with the scope written down.

4. Ongoing support or retainers

Monthly advisory, often pitched as a "fractional Chief AI Officer", or managed services that keep your AI systems running and improving. The cost depends on how much time and responsibility you hand over.

What drives the price up or down

Don't forget the software costs

Consulting fees are only part of the cost. You'll usually also pay for:

A good consultant will estimate these for you up front.

How to avoid paying for the wrong thing

  1. Start small. A focused assessment or one workflow is a low risk way to test a consultant.
  2. Ask for the scope in writing. What's included, what's not, what "done" looks like.
  3. Ask who'll do the work. The senior person on the sales call, or someone else?
  4. Ask about vendor commissions. Independent advice matters.
  5. Ask what happens after handover. Support, ownership of what's built, and access to your data.
  6. Ask for evidence. Case studies with real numbers, or references you can call.

How Attua prices

Every Attua engagement is scoped up front, so you know the cost before we start. Starting from $9,999 (AUD, ex GST).

Is AI consulting worth the money?

It's worth it when it fixes a real, repeated problem and your team actually uses the result. It isn't worth it when you end up with a nice report and nothing changes. The best way to judge it is to estimate the hours a workflow takes each week, what those hours cost you, and how much of that AI could realistically take off. If the saving over a year comfortably beats the fee and the tools, it's worth doing.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI consultant cost per hour in Australia?
Some consultants charge by the hour or day, and others price a defined piece of work. If you're quoted a day rate, ask for a written scope so the total is predictable.

What's the cheapest way to start with AI consulting?
A focused readiness assessment or a strategy for a single department is usually the smallest piece of work.

Do AI consulting prices include GST?
Not always. Some providers list prices plus GST. Check each quote.

Are software subscriptions included in consulting fees?
Usually not. AI tool subscriptions and usage costs are typically separate.

Can I claim AI consulting as a business expense?
Talk to your accountant about your situation.
